Accessibility

Naturespace was built to be used by people who cannot see the screen. The work began in 2014 and has continued ever since.

Naturespace, An App Like No Other

Naturespace's user interface is extremely VoiceOver-friendly which is a huge plus if you are blind like me. The sound quality is unparalleled, especially when using headphones, and the tracks' titles and descriptions are very creative.

Best sleep sound ever! Also, I'm blind. I've never heard a waterfall before. It's a great way to experience something I've never heard before.

What was built

VoiceOver support is comprehensive. Every interactive element in the app, every button, every track, every list item, has an explicit, human-written VoiceOver label. Track titles, durations, and download status are announced together as a single coherent description rather than as fragmented pieces, because the team wrote a custom view container in 2014 to fix the way iOS presents grouped content to blind users by default.

VoiceOver labels are translated into all 10 supported languages. Blind users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Korea, Brazil, mainland China, and Taiwan hear the app in their own language. This goes beyond what most consumer apps do, where accessibility labels are shipped only in English.

The app contains no animation. Nothing fades, slides, bounces, or transitions. This is intentional. It means Naturespace is inherently compatible with users who require Reduce Motion settings, users with vestibular conditions or migraine triggers, and users who find motion in interfaces cognitively distracting. There is nothing to reduce, because there is nothing moving.

Track descriptions read aloud as evocative prose. Every track in the catalog has a literary, sensory description, written by hand and translated into 10 languages. When VoiceOver reads these descriptions aloud, a blind listener does not just hear the recording, they hear the place described in language. As one reviewer put it, the app "helps me picture the scenery." The descriptions were written for sighted readers but they work, perhaps even better, for listeners who arrive without preconceptions.

From listeners

Other reviews from blind, visually impaired, and VoiceOver-using listeners on the App Store, dated 2019 to 2022, from four countries.

I've used this app since 2014 and have loved it the whole time. As a blind person, it helps me picture the scenery. I love how accessible this app is and have told lots of people about this unique app experience.

I have used this app every night for almost 4 years now to help me sleep, and I also love using it during the day. Thank you so much for making it accessible for visually impaired people.

Nothing has helped as much as the recordings in the app. The amount of work that must have gone into creating these recordings is truly impressive. Plus, the app is accessible with VoiceOver.

Super! Vi skal VoiceOver.
